The A.J. Mela Collection

A.J. Mela (1846–1904), who was born in Kuopio, was a nature and plant enthusiast his entire life. He became well-known in the Kuopio area for his collecting expeditions, but he also made scientific excursions to Lapland, the Kola Peninsula, and Russian Karelia.

Mela's herbarium contained about 15,000 specimens, the oldest from the year 1864. This valuable collection, which he donated to the Kuopio Naturalists' Society and its new museum, was the basis for the collections of the Kuopio Natural History Museum.
